Whispered interpreting is often used at smaller gatherings or less formal meetings, factory visits, exhibitions, etc.
In whispered interpreting, the interpreter sits or stands next to the small target-language audience (ideally no more than two people) whilst whispering a simultaneous interpretation of the matter to hand. This method requires even more concentration on the part of the interpreter because he or she has to filter out what is being said from background noises (such as air con systems, fans on projectors, chitchat, clinking of coffee cups and glasses, rustling of paper, etc.) particularly if people speak in a direction other than towards the interpreter.
Whispered interpreting requires no equipment but may be done via a microphone and headphones if the target-language audience comprises more than two people.
