Simultaneous interpreting is used at international conferences and formal meetings, with interpreters working in pairs.
In simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter, sitting in a sound-proof booth, renders the message in the target language as quickly as he or she can formulate it from the source language. The interpreter speaks into a microphone while clearly seeing and hearing the source-language speaker via earphones. The simultaneous interpretation is rendered to the target-language listeners via their earphones.
For less formal meetings, factory vistis, exhibitions etc. where booths are not an option, the interpreter may also use a wireless, portable simultaneous interpretation system (also known as a tour guide system). The interpreter simply hears what is said in the meeting and whispers the translation into a microphone. The delegates have a headset with which they listen to the live translation.
